Description

Spotting Fluid (Non-Weighted)

Spotting Fluid (Non-Weighted) is a specially formulated, oil-based or synthetic-based fluid used to free differentially stuck pipe in the wellbore. When drill pipe becomes stuck against the wellbore wall due to differential pressure, spotting fluid is pumped to the stuck zone to reduce the contact area and pressure differential, allowing the pipe to be freed. Non-Weighted Spotting Fluid is used in formations where additional mud weight is not required. Its unique formulation penetrates the filter cake between the stuck pipe and the formation, reducing friction and enabling pipe recovery.

Safety Information
Handling Precautions
  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin — contains mineral or synthetic oil
  • Use appropriate PPE — gloves, safety goggles, and chemical-resistant clothing
  • Keep away from ignition sources — combustible liquid
Storage Conditions
  • Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area
  • Keep away from heat sources and direct sunlight
  • Recommended storage temperature: 5°C – 45°C
  • Shelf Life: 2 years from date of manufacture
First Aid Measures
  • Eyes: Flush with water for 15 minutes; seek medical attention
  • Skin: Remove contaminated clothing; wash with soap and water
  • Inhalation: Move to fresh air; seek medical attention if irritation persists
  • Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting; seek immediate medical attention

⚠ Combustible liquid — GHS flammable liquid category
âš  Moderate irritant; handle with full PPE

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1. What is differential sticking and when is Spotting Fluid needed?
Differential sticking occurs when the drill string is held against the wellbore wall by the pressure difference between the mud column and the formation pore pressure. Spotting Fluid is pumped to the stuck zone to penetrate the filter cake and reduce friction so the pipe can be worked free.
Q2. How quickly does Spotting Fluid work?
Soak time typically ranges from 2 to 12 hours depending on the severity of sticking, formation type, and filter cake thickness. The pipe should be worked (rotated and reciprocated) during the soak period.
Q3. What is the recommended volume of Spotting Fluid to pump?
Typically, 2 to 3 times the annular volume across the stuck zone is recommended to ensure full coverage of the stuck pipe section.
Q4. Can Spotting Fluid be used in water-based mud systems?
Yes. Non-Weighted Spotting Fluid is compatible with water-based mud systems. It is pumped as a separate slug to the stuck zone and does not contaminate the active mud system when used correctly.
Q5. Is a weighted version of Spotting Fluid available?
Yes. Weighted Spotting Fluids are available for high-pressure wells where additional mud weight is required to maintain well control while freeing stuck pipe. Please contact us for details.
Q6. What is the shelf life of Spotting Fluid?
Spotting Fluid has a shelf life of 2 years when stored in sealed containers in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight and ignition sources.
